Chronology of cameras Beck R J
The Cornex is a magazine box camera designed for 12 quarter-plate-sized plates. It claims to have been manufactured in London and was priced at one Guinea (1 pound and 1 shilling). It is constructed from white wood covered with a coarse-grain faux leather. The materials used are typical of an entry-level, popular camera.
The A, B, and C models are distinguished by the quality of their lenses:
- Model A: It features an unbranded achromatic lens with an f/11 aperture.
- Model B: This model is equipped with a Beck lens, a doublet rectilinear lens also with an f/11 aperture. It offers better image quality than the Model A and is slightly more expensive.
- Model C: Model C comes with a Beck Symmetrical R.R. lens with an f/8 aperture. It is the most advanced and highest-quality model among the three, reflected in its higher price.
All three models of the Cornex have a rudimentary diaphragm with a rotary-style aperture. There is no focus distance adjustment. Instead, focus is achieved by using magnifying lenses known as Cornex Magnifiers to change the shooting distance.
In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
